Remember that strategy when they first introduced the Retina MacBook Pro? They kept the old model around and lowered the price until they were able to get costs down for the Retina models. This lets people have a lower cost entry to the Mac ecosystem and given Apple's fantastic customer loyalty, they know that people will be likely to stay once they are hooked. So today they buy an $800 MacBook Air and 3 years from now they're buying the $1500 MacBook Pro. It's a good business move.
