In his younger years, he abused other drugs, including heroin, as well. He drank mostly on tour, to deal with the stress. Later in life, he finally quit drinking when his wife Pam gave him an ultimatum. Considering how wasted he was in his younger years, those performances are amazing. He had a real gift.
