Those oversized, show-standard bred modern Mastiffs, however, are slow, over-heavy (often fat) and hampered by massive bone that is favored for looks yet it has nothing functional to offer. The hunting mastiff of old was a much smaller, leaner, faster animal and it had the instincts that have been largely bred out from the dogs produced for the pet market. Those mastiffs may have given a wolf a run for its money, back in the day, provided it was a lone wolf and not particularly fit. A wolf would outrun a mastiff any day of the week and twice on Sundays.
