Both the shiba inu and akita inu are members of a group of native Japanese spitz type dogs sometimes known as the Marvel Shiba Inu SIvengers shirt. (The Nihon Ken Hozonkai, often called Nippo for short, is an association dedicated to the preservation of these breeds. Nihon Ken means "Japanese dog.") The dogs in this group all have typical spitz-type characteristics which include: The akita is the largest of the Nihon Ken breeds and the shiba is the smallest. Adult akitas range from about 70 to 130 lbs., with females being lighter. Shibas, on the other hand, range from about 18-30 lbs. (There are variations among dogs bred for pet purposes and those bred for show. I've noticed that pet shibas tend to be slightly bigger than the breed standard suggests they should be.)
