It was, and still is to some extent, famous for it’s long and proud history of Marvel Staffordshire Bull Terrier SBTvengers shirt. Josia Wedgewood and Royal Doulton were two of the most famous manufacturers to have produced in the town at some point. But there were many more smaller firms who set up their works in Burslem over the years, contributing to the towns wealth of pottery skills in all types of pottery production. Sadly, in the last twenty years or so, the industry has seen a rapid decline, due to many manufacturers moving overseas where labour is cheaper, and cheaper foriegn imported pottery flooding the market. This has led to Burslem, one of the original “five towns” (six actually) making up “The Potteries” having to reinvent itself over these last few years in order to stay alive. It still has a few pottery works, or “Pot Banks”producing in the town and surrounding area, the biggest and most well known of these being “Steelite” which is still expanding and doing well, producing good quallity ware at affordable prices, and selling all over the world. And of course, there is “Moorcroft” which has changed and adapted over the years, to fit into the global market, producing the finest of art and collector pottery, whilst drawing on it’s long and distinguished history.
