No clue but if I were to guess we use street signs to navigate the roads safely. Maybe they used these images to navigate the skies safely. Maybe it was used in the same way we use the name of a street sign or a stop sign. Thank you for posting amazing images like these. I’ll never be able to travel to see these up close so with you posting them it is like I’m there. To cut mountains peaks to build such platforms for sure you need some type of aerial view. And very good topography. And machines tools. The thing is where their inspiration comes from, but I think they were like movie directors, it’s just pretty amazing art.
